Where to Eat in Northern Corfu

This is the Greece Travel Secrets selection of where to eat in northern Corfu, from classy restaurants and traditional tavernas to beachside fish tavernas.

Argo

In an excellent spot right on Gouviá Marina, the smart Argo is naturally popular with the yachting crowd. There is a large covered outdoor patio as well as indoor seating, the service is superb and the tables are elegantly laid out to provide a good setting for the food – which warrants it. There are grills and all the usual Greek staples, but it would be had to beat the fresh seafood. No website.

Cavo Barbaro

Cavo Barbaro Restaurant on Corfu in GreeceCavo Barbaro

On the lovely little bay of Avlaki, east of Kassiopi, by a small shingle beach backed with red and yellow poppies, the Cavo Barbaro is a delightful restaurant. Swallows fly through the open kitchen windows and out through the door, swooping over the tables on the covered front patio. The menu is ambitious, with unusual starters such as aubergine soufflé and main dishes such as pork fillet with plums. Definitely deserves repeat visits.

Du Lac

This restaurant quickly established itself as a favourite with Corfiots who like their food, with many making the 20-minute drive out from Corfu Town to Limni for dinner here. Its long frontage with squat palm trees is easily spotted on the main road, and inside the décor is very simple but the tables immaculately set. There are wooden beams and low lighting, the cuisine ranges across the Mediterranean and can be washed down with one of the large list of Greek wines. No website.

Efkalyptos (Eucalyptus)

Eucalyptus Restaurant on Corfu in GreeceEucalyptus Restaurant

This former olive press has been a restaurant since 1982 and is in a perfect spot right by the beach in the gorgeous bay of Ayios Stefanos. The food is perfect too, all being home-made and featuring many dishes which make you hungry just to read them, such as the house special, Eucalyptus chicken: chicken fillet cooked in a pot with herbs, vegetables and bacon. The wine list is helpful too, as it explains which of the unfamiliar Greek grape varieties goes best with which kind of food. Check their website.

Etrusco

Is Etrusco the best restaurant on Corfu? Many people think so and it has been rated one of the best in the whole of Greece. The immaculate pastel-coloured main dining room would not be out of place in London or Paris: nor would the prices! But try the marinated salmon or the duck with pasta and truffles (a house speciality) and you will think the splurge well worth it. You’ll find it in Kato Korakiana.

Little Italy

Southern Italian gourmet cuisine is how this Kassiopi restaurant describes its cooking, and the fact that it is packed every night suggests it's doing something right. Booking's recommended if you want to dine in the lovely little outdoors courtyard, with its roses, geraniums and vines growing up the walls. Try the fresh pasta, home-made pizza or one of the specials such as lamb fillet in a wine and rosemary sauce. No website.

Roula

Corfiots regard Roula as one of the best fish tavernas on this stretch of coast, helped by its location looking out over Gouvia Marina. It's not cheap but in summer you will still have to book a table, as people drive out from Corfu Town to sample the fresh fish, lobster in season and perennial Greek favourites such as fried squid and octopus in vinegar.

Skondros Taverna

This traditional Greek taverna is right by the beach in Acharávi, the perfect spot for lunch. The menu at Skondros is international but there is a good selection of home-made Greek dishes, and daily specials. The mixed starters dish for one or two people is highly recommended, and so too the home-made pizzas, perhaps washed down with a glass of draught Mythos.

Taverna Agni

One of the most enterprising tavernas in the area, whose website is a good gateway to a lot of Corfu information. The Taverna Agni overlooks the beach in the popular little bay of Agni, which until very recently could only be reached by boat, and you can still book a boat taxi to take you there and back from nearby resorts. Food from the Anglo-Corfiot couple who run the taverna could be described as sophisticated Greek, with such dishes as mussels cooked in wine and herbs.

Nikolas Taverna

Right by the water at the southern end of Agní Bay, where there are several good eating options, Taverna Nikolas has been here since the present owner's grandfather first set up a café for visiting fishermen and traders. Fresh fish is the best dish, best eaten at a table overlooking the little wooden jetty where boats tie up, but don't miss the fascinating interior too.
