Greece Travel Secrets Newsletter Number 7: Driving in Greece
September 17, 2022

Welcome to Our Newsletter

Inspiration and information to help with your travel planning for Greece and the Greek islands.

Welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter, this time on the subject of driving in Greece. Some of our best times in Greece have been when driving – and some of our scariest. Mike was driving somewhere on the mainland one time and had just picked up a soldier who was hitch-hiking. As they drove up a slight hill, a car came round the distant corner on the wrong side of the road.

The driver didn’t seem to realise his mistake and it was getting to the stage of wondering what to do for the best. Mike was just about to swerve to the other side of the road when the driver realised his error and corrected it. Phew. ‘It’s Sunday afternoon,’ the soldier said. ‘He’s been drinking at lunchtime.’

But don’t let that put you off! Greece is one of the most wonderful countries in the world to explore by car, and really get off the beaten track and see some stunning scenery. Here’s some advice and inspiration.

Driving in Greece: General Advice

First of all, two pages of advice. The first is just an overview with some general advice, while the second gives lots of practical information about rules and regulations, and conventions.

Practical Information

Best Drives in Greece

What are the best drives in Greece? We’ve done so many that it’s hard to choose, but here are a couple of round-ups of some of the top drives we’ve made.

Scenic Drives in Northern Greece

Best Drives on Crete

Crete is the perfect island for a driving holiday. We’ve driven there several times, and it’s such a big island that there’s plenty of exploring to be done. You can also discover some places that few visitors ever find, as well as Crete’s classic scenic drives, like these:

The Lasithi Plateau on Crete

Amari Valley Drive
Lasithi Plateau Drive
West Coast of Crete Drive

Driving on Mainland Greece

Driving is the best way to discover some of the most scenic places in the country, many of which are in the mountainous mainland. These are places not usually well-served by local transport. Here are some of the amazing places we’ve driven to over the years, and again it’s hard to choose. There are lots more!

The Prespa Lakes

The Prespa Lakes
The Vikos Gorge
Ioannina
Kastoria
Meteora

And that should be plenty of encouragement for you to think about a fly-drive holiday on your next visit to Greece. And don’t overlook the winter months. We’ve driven around Greece a couple of times in the middle of winter and enjoyed some gloriously sunny weather. Safe travels and thanks for subscribing.
